Question by *Laura*: Opinions on “spanking is abuse” parents?
What is your opinion of the people that say “spanking your child is abuse” “I’m going to call CPS on you if I see you spank that child” “my child can do what they want, they’re their own person” etc and end up with drug addicted pregnant teens, and want to blame the REST of society for their children being how they are? Don’t you agree that those parents should be the most to blame for how their children are? I mean obviously they’ve taught them no morals,no self value, nothing of that sort, not a difference between right and wrong. Your opinions? I think spanking is 100% fine if it’s done in the right way, with the right reasons behind it,not just because you’re mad at your child. It’s done to teach a lesson, not to abuse a child. HUGE difference between spanking and abuse, and by not spanking/teaching your children right/wrong,you’re allowing THEM To become the abusers to someone else because they don’t know any better.

I think when a parent spanks their child its for a good reason. It keeps them steady and out of jail.!

Laura-

I thought you got this all out yesterday. Why still ranting today?

I personally do not spank. I have no children of my own- and regardless of a parent’s discipline techniques, I feel I have no right to lay my hand on another person’s child- EVER.

Question by Nunya Bidness: Why do non smokers feel they can abuse smokers so?
I’ve known this to be an agitation for smokers for some time now, but until recently I was not aware that the abuse is so acute. I became aware while seeing a very opinionated and vocal woman who is not longer in my life, for this and other reasons. Some events that embarrassed me personally.

1. The fake cough. She wouldn’t even wait until the poor guy had pulled the cigarette out of his pack before beginning to cough violently. She was angered, and would not speak to me for most of the rest of the day, when I offered her a cough sweet. She was genuinely surprised that I was unaware she was “making a statement”

2. The “gas mask”. She’d literally make one out of her hand, while fake coughing, whilst passing people smoking at a bus stop. She did not want to hear that, first and foremost, a hand is not an effective gas mask, and secondly, that she was already breathing in worse from automobile exhaust.

3. The lecture. I don’t smoke. As a general rule, I set out an ashtray for my houseguests who do. This, to me, is automatic and just good hosting. The last time she was a guest in my home, indeed the last time I consented to see her at all, I introduced her to my friends at a barbecue I was hosting. She enjoyed the smell of the charcoal burning. She did not enjoy that I would permit my guests to smoke tobacco. She mad a very big deal out of attempting to correct the first guest that lit a cigarette. Thankfully, I was able to usher her out before she turned the entire affair into a disaster. I further made it clear that she was not welcome back. After profusely apologising to my guests, I was told that this is “standard operating procedure” for many who do not smoke.

I have heard several arguments toward such abusive treatment since then, and none of them make much sense to me. I understand it’s a dangerous hobby. Skydiving and eating fried food are hazardous as well, but these things seem to be encouraged. Automobile exhaust and bovine flatulence are more prevelent in the make-up of polution than tobacco smoke. The Class A carcinogen alcohol is several times more concentrated that tobacco smoke even in the most smoke filled bars. People in my family generally live 85-90 years, whether they smoke or not. Certain perfumes cause a more acute reaction in people than tobacco smoke, at least that I have witnessed, yet there are no restrictions on where one may wear perfume and where one may not.

It seems to me that most of the “facts” I was quoted are merely propaganda presented by companies that peddle aids to stop smoking. Most of these are merely alternative delivery systems for nicotine. I do know that people’s emotions are more easily engaged than their intellects, but shouldn’t intellect take over when cooler heads prevail?

Tobacco, as I understand it, was originally smoked by American aboriginees as a sign of peace. What is all the fighting about?
Off topic, K.
Gabe – That people will attack oral tobacco users makes just as little sense. I had actually forgotten about that incident. It wasn’t pleasant to watch someone spitting into a coffee cup, but it didn’t warrant her reaction.
JLB — You made a cogent point. It seems as though just about everything we encounter these days has not just the potential, but a very real chance of killing us. I would think that once everyone realized this, they would just stop caring about every little thing, be happy, and let everyone else alone. The other part of your response, your understanding that smoking did away with your parents, is certainly reason to be upset. However, it is not reason to be upset with strangers who happen to smoke. That would be the equivalent of being angry with everyone who drives because ones parents died as the result of an automobile wreck. I feel the tobacco companies, as well as any company that makes consumables, should be held to account in so far as distributing a product that is fit for consumption. That is, free of additives that are not naturally found in the consumable. For example, if one eats meat, one is abusing steroids and antibiotics without even knowing it.

I usually lecture back at how their precious cars, buildings, power plants, etc. are doing a lot of harm to people and the environment as well.

People are more aware of what’s happening to the environment and since the don’t like it they need to blame someone for it. They can’t blame the buildings they work at because they rely on them for income, they can’t blame the power plants for they need power in their house, they can’t blame factories that make the clothing they where nor can they blame their cars which is their means of transportation. Even if they did take a taxi or a public transit system, making a law where those type of transportations are outlawed would put many bus drivers and cab drivers out of a job. So, the one thing people will do is blame it on smokers, not everyone needs to survive in this world if they don’t smoke.

It’s not right. I feel that some people who are nonsmokers are refusing to see that EVERYONE contributes to polluting the earth when we all rely so much on other things that pollute the earth.

Question by fancychancie: How to get my brother to stop smoking pot and start going to school?
I am 22, my sister is 20, my little brother (star of this discussion) is 15, my dad is 54. My little brother is a major pot smoker and it has ruined his 1st year of high school cause he is ALWAYS ditching to go smoke. My dad has given him drug tests and he will fail them, so my dad will take away his Xbox, phone, allowance basically everything he enjoys. NONE of this seems to phase him, he’s still ditching, smoking, getting all Fs. We have talked with the school counselor multiple times and each time it ends in something along these lines “Well, he is on my list, but keeping him in school and not smoking isn’t my job.” He DOES NOT want to help, my dad has to work to support us so he can’t follow him around all day and make sure my brother is attending. My dad is at his wits end, any more suggestions that will help us get a grasp on this kid again will be much appreciated!
Thanks

Is he a human? He doesnt wanna help, study, work. Let him smoke, he’ll die someday you take his xbox and enjoy. Or take a fake lung cancer test and say that he has lung cancer and is gonna die after 4 months and cant be saved now.

Answer by cr
You could try giving him back his Xbox or phone, etc. or try to find something that he will enjoy more than smoking pot. If he finds a new hobby, game, friend (who is a good influence) or whatever, he may be more interested in the game and possibly smoke less and less. As for him ditching school, I don’t know, sorry. Hope my advice may have helped at all though.

Question by -: Need advice: Should I finish my Associate’s degree?
Im 5 classes away from completing my Associates degree in Psychology (it has taken me forever to complete it but im almost done) but I really dont have an real interest in Psychology anymore (I dont want to get a BA in psy.) Im thinking about getting an certificate to be a paralegal..

Should I complete my associate’s and start a certificate right after? Will I be more marketable if I go and get the certificate?

Im not even sure if i can get some sort of job with an AA in Psyc.

Best answer:

Answer by foxtrot
Yes you should complete you AA Degree in Psychology and then go for the Paralegal Cert. Regardless of the vocation you end up being employed, having some form of College Degree on your resume helps increase your value. I have found from over 7 years of experience in the job market that it pays to get a college education in addition to all the certs. With an AA in Psyc, you could land a job in a school as a Counselor at the very least.

Hope this helps.

Answer by Achelios
I don’t know what school counseling office foxtrot is referring to

in most, if not all states, a Master’s Degree is required to be a school counselor

you might as well complete the associates degree — having some kind of degree is often better than no degree

the reason is because you will be highly limited in the use of Fin Aid to change course.
the reason is because (1) you must be enrolled & taking classes in a degree program not just certificate program (2) you are only allowed to attempt (count in every class including withdrawals) 150% of the credits required by degree type

before you enroll in those 5 classes, take time to sit down with both your academic advisor & your fin aid advisor — you need a clear picture of Plan A (getting AA & then cert) & Plan B (getting cert without AA or changing major to paralegal for AA, if the school offers it)

you also need to do some checking into your hireability with both Plan A & Plan B —- in many areas of the country, there are no paralegal jobs…. so you really need to check into that job market before you commit to that path. There are so many out of work lawyers doing the work of paralegals that companies can get a whole lot more bang for their buck letting a desperate lawyer do the paralegal work at the paralegal price

to the best of my knowledge, the jobs for AA psych include clerk in psych unit at a hospital or inpatient facility & “security therapy aid” which is a fancy word for security guard at a mental health facility, rehab facility, or prison for those unfit to stand trial

Question by Olivia: How many years of school do you need to become a substance abuse and behavioral counselor?
Also, not a school counselor. I want to work with adults and teenagers but I didn’t know I would have to go to school for almost eight years? Is this true? Did my school counselor have to go to school for that long too?

Answer by StellaStarfire
“While on-the-job training is often provided, some employers prefer candidates that have a bachelor’s degree or higher in psychology, sociology or a related subject along with two years of counseling in a related field or equivalent life experience such as being a former drug addict or performing volunteer work. Some substance abuse counselors have a master’s degree in mental health counseling. Numerous colleges provide associate degree programs for counselors which usually take two years to complete. The programs include training in drugs and alcohol. Some of the programs offer training in crisis intervention.

The criteria for licensure varies by state. In some cases, the candidates are only required to have a high school diploma and certification. The National Board for Certified Counselors offers a general practice credential of National Certified Counselor. The national certification is distinct from state licensing. The board also provides a speciality certification in addiction counseling.”
