Question by Taylor E: Is there a drug to help with my “condition?”?
Ok, let me make this clear first.
I do not do drugs, I have never been addicted to any kind of drug in the past. I am not that kind of person.
Which leads me to ask….
I have very bad anxiety and stress. I am a perfectionist in school. I’m one of those kids you probably hated because I always have to get that “A”. I guess you could say I’m kind of OCD about it in a way. I don’t know if this is normal, but school and my schoolwork is all I ever think about. Even after finishing studying, doing homework, I still feel like I have more to do and can never find myself relaxing. On days we have tests, I have nightmares, and that “test” is all I can think about in the morning. When I get to class, my heart starts to race, and I become extremely nervous, dizzy, and my hands start to shake. I am so tired of my schoolwork having such emotional and physical tolls on my body. I just want to be able to relax and not freak out right before the test is handed out.
I have researched that xanax is used to reduce anxiety, but can also be highly addictive. I believe I have enough self-control to not become addicted to this drug, but I’m sure thats what everyone else thought too. I don’t know what to do, I am kind of embarassed to go to a doctor and tell him my story, because it is kind of ridiculous in a way. But school and grades are an integral part of me and I am tired of feeling like I’m going to have a panic attack right before every test I take. I need SOMETHING to calm my nerves, because I can NOT keep living like this. It’s driving me insane.
Please help.

This might not answer your question really, but helping you be informed knowing I, myself being involved with drugs in the past is that any drug that is said to be addictive will be. Even if you say and “know” you won’t, you most likely will considering your body’s craving it and such.
You should visit a doctor to get the right kind of medication instead of depending on possibly no knowledge strangers that will give you stupid or irrational answers.
Hopefully though, you get the one you need. Good luck.

Question by : Can the uninsured and unemployed go to alcohol rehab too?
Ok, I am 20 years old now and I am no longer in denial of being an alcoholic. I realize it now. My life is so messed up and I want to change before things get even worse. The only problem is that now I am jobless again due to my alcoholism and I am close to broke. Do rehabs accept people with no insurance or a job even? Thank you…..

Dear One, Congratulations on your epiphany!!! You will have a great life being sober. I know of only one place to go and that is Salvation Army. They help you in every way possible. Be open, willing and honest, and all will be given to you. I am so proud of you! Take good care.

Answer by Nigam
You know my name, I am an alcoholic. I have been sober for over 9 years. When I was in Chicago, what happened to you, happened to me. I went to the South Suburban Center for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. They did not require money or for me to be employed.Their only requirement, in a manner of speaking, was that I had admitted to myself that I was an alcoholic, that my goal was to become sober, and then remain sober. It was a very good rehabilitation center. Now, the U.S. is a huge country. I don’t know where you live. I am sure you can find a rehabilitation center which understands your difficulties. The way to go about finding this out is:
1. Contact Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) on their toll free number.
2. If you are willing to, go to AA meetings.
3. Please do not think that I am even remotely suggesting that you are “crazy”, but the local or community mental health centers can be sometimes a big help.
4. If you cannot travel anywhere for lack of funds, do ask yourself this question: “Can I become sober without going to a rehabilitation center?” My answer would be:”Yes, you most certainly can.” It is good to be with people who have the same problem as we do, but is not a requirement. That is of course my opinion.
5. Last suggestion, go to the website: www.about.com, choose Alcoholism, go to chat rooms. They are decent people. You will not feel uncomfortable chatting with them, asking questions and so on.
You already taken the first step according to AA, which is admitting. You have courage. You WILL make it. Take it one day at a time. If you are a believer, God bless you, if not ignore me.
The reason I am doing this is because in atleast some ways I owe my sobriety to some exceptional people from AA. I always remember that, as a result I would like to help anyone who asks for help, even though I am some 10,000 miles away from you, in India.

Answer based on U.S.

Social work job duties/responsibilities will depend of course on the job position we have, which as you can see below will definitely vary on the type of work we do.

Social workers can work in various settings, to include administrative jobs. Some individuals with social work degrees, for example, write grants, do research and work on fundraiser in agencies that may be not for proft. Social workers work in health care settings (hospice, home health, hospitals, nursing homes); mental health settings (state department of mental health, residential treatment centers, alcohol/drug rehab, etc); dept of social services (child protective services, foster care, investigator, etc); other state jobs may include probation and parole officers; youth services (to include juvenile facilities, counseling, residential); dept of aging (adult protective services, community support worker); maternal health (education, home visits, etc); and other public health positions. Social workers who have their Masters in Social Work and typically a clinical license can work for the federal government, to include the Veterans Administration as well as a civilian working on military installations.

Other positions may include working as a victim advocate; domestic violence shelters; grass roots organizations (i.e. I saw a job looking for a social worker to work for Mothers Against Drunk Driving); organizations/agencies that provide services for those who are homeless (i.e. Salvation Army, catholic charities).

A good online job search is “Indeed” http://www.indeed.com By searching for position in working with youth, youth at risk, etc. this can give you a sense of the qualifications/job duties.

An example of a job description in working with youth is a youth counseling III position with the state of Colorado. Salary: $ 4,969.00 – $ 7,168.00 Monthly. “This position exists to provide leadership and clinical direction to the treatment team at the facility. In addition, this position is experienced in clinical mental health and family interventions and serves as the Clinical Director to provide oversight for the treatment services at the facility.” Minimum Qualifications “Education Requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science, correctional science, corrections, counseling, counseling psychology, criminal justice, criminology, education, guidance and counseling, helping/human services, human and development, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, social work, sociology or youth and adult corrections.” http://www.colorado.gov/
