For reasons we can only imagine, history did not report much about Vincent Van Gogh’s addiction to alcohol, especially absinthe, and upon his arrival in Yokohama, Vincent tasted sake for the first time. He was pleased by the way it made him feel, according to letters he wrote Theo.

Vincent also mentioned how lovely the Japanese women were and how they seemed to be attracted to him and his paintings. Vincent did many portraits of the women he met in the red-lantern district. Some of these days, it is possible some of these portraits might surface.
