Question by Nunya Bidness: Why do non smokers feel they can abuse smokers so?
I’ve known this to be an agitation for smokers for some time now, but until recently I was not aware that the abuse is so acute. I became aware while seeing a very opinionated and vocal woman who is not longer in my life, for this and other reasons. Some events that embarrassed me personally.

1. The fake cough. She wouldn’t even wait until the poor guy had pulled the cigarette out of his pack before beginning to cough violently. She was angered, and would not speak to me for most of the rest of the day, when I offered her a cough sweet. She was genuinely surprised that I was unaware she was “making a statement”

2. The “gas mask”. She’d literally make one out of her hand, while fake coughing, whilst passing people smoking at a bus stop. She did not want to hear that, first and foremost, a hand is not an effective gas mask, and secondly, that she was already breathing in worse from automobile exhaust.

3. The lecture. I don’t smoke. As a general rule, I set out an ashtray for my houseguests who do. This, to me, is automatic and just good hosting. The last time she was a guest in my home, indeed the last time I consented to see her at all, I introduced her to my friends at a barbecue I was hosting. She enjoyed the smell of the charcoal burning. She did not enjoy that I would permit my guests to smoke tobacco. She mad a very big deal out of attempting to correct the first guest that lit a cigarette. Thankfully, I was able to usher her out before she turned the entire affair into a disaster. I further made it clear that she was not welcome back. After profusely apologising to my guests, I was told that this is “standard operating procedure” for many who do not smoke.

I have heard several arguments toward such abusive treatment since then, and none of them make much sense to me. I understand it’s a dangerous hobby. Skydiving and eating fried food are hazardous as well, but these things seem to be encouraged. Automobile exhaust and bovine flatulence are more prevelent in the make-up of polution than tobacco smoke. The Class A carcinogen alcohol is several times more concentrated that tobacco smoke even in the most smoke filled bars. People in my family generally live 85-90 years, whether they smoke or not. Certain perfumes cause a more acute reaction in people than tobacco smoke, at least that I have witnessed, yet there are no restrictions on where one may wear perfume and where one may not.

It seems to me that most of the “facts” I was quoted are merely propaganda presented by companies that peddle aids to stop smoking. Most of these are merely alternative delivery systems for nicotine. I do know that people’s emotions are more easily engaged than their intellects, but shouldn’t intellect take over when cooler heads prevail?

Tobacco, as I understand it, was originally smoked by American aboriginees as a sign of peace. What is all the fighting about?

I feel the tobacco companies, as well as any company that makes consumables, should be held to account in so far as distributing a product that is fit for consumption. That is, free of additives that are not naturally found in the consumable. For example, if one eats meat, one is abusing steroids and antibiotics without even knowing it.

I usually lecture back at how their precious cars, buildings, power plants, etc. are doing a lot of harm to people and the environment as well.

People are more aware of what’s happening to the environment and since the don’t like it they need to blame someone for it. They can’t blame the buildings they work at because they rely on them for income, they can’t blame the power plants for they need power in their house, they can’t blame factories that make the clothing they where nor can they blame their cars which is their means of transportation. Even if they did take a taxi or a public transit system, making a law where those type of transportations are outlawed would put many bus drivers and cab drivers out of a job. So, the one thing people will do is blame it on smokers, not everyone needs to survive in this world if they don’t smoke.

It’s not right. I feel that some people who are nonsmokers are refusing to see that EVERYONE contributes to polluting the earth when we all rely so much on other things that pollute the earth.
