Question by Shannon: Third speaker in a formal debate tips?
Hey, so I have to debate on the subject That performance enhancing drugs should be allowed in sports. I am the third speaker and I need to know some tips or some easy to read instructions on what I should do. My team is for the argument. Please help.
My point I will discuss is “If they are banned in sports, why not the rest of the world?” and the first speaker will discuss “It’s the athletes choice.” and the second speaker will be discussing “It brings more drug awareness.” and “Referring to the Lance Armstrong case.”
All help is much appreciated, thank you.

the web page (below) describes: How to Write a Speech if You’re Third Speaker

Steps
1 Greet the audience. “Good evening, chairperson, ladies and gentlemen” will suffice. This covers everyone and in a debate, you generally shouldn’t say more than this in terms of a greeting.

2 Explain that before you sum up your team’s case for the night, your opposition has a few major flaws in their argument you would like to point out. This should be your second sentence.

3 Signpost your rebuttals extremely briefly. “The affirmative team has three primary issues with the opposing team’s case”. Some people like to do this, others do not. It can help with your structuring mark, however.

4 Preform your rebuttals by stating the relevant member of the opposing team, what they said, and what you counter to it is. E.g. “The first speaker of the negative team stated that…” “This is incorrect, however, because…” Repeat this for any other rebuttals.

5 “I will now sum up my team’s case for the night”. Always mention this because it signals the end of your rebuttal period and the beginning of your conclusion.

6 Starting from your first speaker’s first argument and working your way through to your second speaker’s last argument, briefly explain what they have argued and why it is correct. Be concise, and as clear as possible.

7 Claim that with all the arguments you have just summed up, there is indisputable proof that your side of the debate is the correct one. Finish your speech by restating the topic or possibly the definition, modified so that it supports your team, e.g. if the topic was, “Vegetables are better than fruit,” and you were the negative team, your last sentence should be, “Vegetables are NOT better than fruit.”
