Question by My Answers Suck: What’s your definition of “abuse”?
I hang out in celebrity section and notice a lot of people commenting on Chris Brown hitting Rihanna saying he abused her. To me, “abuse” means a habitual occurrence. For this argument we won’t get into whether or not he has done so in the past. So if he hits her on this one occasion — even if going overboard — does that constitute as “physical abuse”?

I was thinking if someone who has never had alcohol gets absolutely plastered one time, they are not considered as alcohol abusers. That term usually conjures up an addicted alcoholic. Same for drugs.

What do you think?
So Beyond Mordant, would you classify this as abuse? When I hear of spousal abuse, I think of battery on more than one occasion. Habitual offense. I can see how your definition would apply, though.

What happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna was a fight / assault. “Abuse” cannot be a once off incident.

Question by that 1 chick: What happens at a drug abuse (rehab) class?
Had a random drug test at work today. I may or may not pass. I’ve been there over a year and I know the bosses like me too much to fire me. I talked to a friend that works there and she said its happened before. They didn’t get fired but they made this person do “rehab” (aka drug abuse class)
I was wondering, what the heck do you do in there? Is it like school? How long will it last? How often am I gonna get drug tested?
If you’ve ever experienced that, let me know what goes down. Greatly appreciated.

“The program” varies far too much to for us to give you too much insight. You can expect random drug tests for 1 to 10 years however; again depending upon how serious your company is, their insurance companies are, your state’s injury compensation program is, what you tested positive for and how much, how your company’s customers react to positive tests, and how/which/what contracts your company is carrying for their product.

The function of a re-hab program is not to send you to time out or punish you for having used drugs/alcohol. Rather, it is to encourage you to stop using the substance of choice, encourage you to not take up a different substance, and to be able to provide some sort of success statistics. It may or may not include random or routine drug testing for the duration of the program. It may or may not include classroom time, group or individual therapy sessions, or the requirement to attend additional sessions like NA or AA. It may or may not include personal introspection exercises, tools and exercises for future abstinence purposes, and more. Again, the goal is for graduates to no longer use for the rest of their lives after graduation.

It is good that your company does value its employees to give them a chance. Do realize that this is often done on a case by case basis and that the attitudes of the company, an individual boss, or the top tier can change on a whim. Also, that the company probably has a lot of external pressures including considering the cost of rehab for an employee versus the cost of obtaining and training a new hire. Good luck.

Question by Jenn: A job as a drug and alcohol counselor?
Do I have to get some type of degree to become and drug and alcohol counselor or get certified to be one?

Best answer:

Answer by engakwasdky
Yes and Yes.

As far as degrees go, you will have to get at least a bachelor’s degree in social work or other mental health field (psychology, sociology, etc.). Now, some facilities will hire you with just a bachelor’s degree and give you the title of a “counselor”, but MOST facilities require you to have a master’s degree in mental health counseling, counseling psychology, or social work. And as a word of advice, most places require you to have a master’s degree in social work (MSW) for insurance billing purposes.

Certification depends on where you live, but I believe each state has it’s own board of addictions certification. You may be able to search for the requirements on Google (or I may be able to help if I knew what state you reside in). In many cases, you will be able to obtain employment and work as a counselor while waiting for certification. Some certs will require you to be employed as a counselor for a set number of years so they know you have experience and actually know what you are doing. In other words, certification is not necessarily something you need to do before you start job searching. However, not to confuse you, but if you do get your MSW most counseling agencies require that you have your license to practice as a social worker. This is something that all social workers have the option of doing regardless of the field of social work they are entering (i.e., hospital social work, gerontology, etc.).

Let me know if you have any more questions! The field of drug/alcohol dependency is rapidly growing, so counselors are in high demand!
